10 Tips to Transition to Natural Hair

Perhaps the biggest question asked when it comes to going natural is whether to “Big Chop” or Transition Slowly. Both choices take patience, determination, and self love. Hair is a very personal; with many different textures and patterns (Click HERE to listen to HairYum Yummy Podcast about Hair Textures).

Going natural? You have 2 choices:

  1. Big Chop – Cut all your chemically-relaxed hair off.
  2. Transition slowly – slowly cut the chemically-relaxed hair off with each trim.

Here are some tips for Transitioning Hair:

  1. Condition with Care – Deep conditioning the hair is extremely important. Your hair is in a weak, fragile state while you’re transitioning, that’s why it needs all the nutrients and moisture it can get. A properly conditioned hair allows for easy combing and styling. Deep conditioning weekly will help maintain the vitality of your hair while transitioning to natural hair. HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner does a wonderful job of strengthening and moisturizing hair.
  2. Moisturizing your hair is a must – Moisturizing your strands on a regular basis is important since curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair. Look for hydrating ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera, shea butter, and avocado oil on the label of hair products to make sure you’re getting the maximum hydration. HairYum Coconut Souffle Leave-in Conditioner works really well for dry and curly hair. It is also super-hydrating and will leave your curls soft, moisturized, and bouncy. Use HairYum Moisture Hydrating Mist, great for adding moisture to dehydrated hair.
  3. It is easier for some men to viagra online for sale cope with so called impotence. The sildenafil 100mg tablets duck was expected to be unharmed by being lifted aloft. 4. Be open to finding your go-to natural hairstyle – Remember to experiment with styles and have patience with your hair. Use Pinterest and Youtube, your options are endless. You can try braids, crochet twists, flat twists, braid outs, crown braids, twist backs, and more.
  5. Pay attention to the way you detangle your hair – The best time to detangle your hair is when it’s wet. Use a paddle brush or wide-tooth comb when detangling your hair. Make sure to use HairYum Detangling Mist to moisturize your hair and loosen any tangles or knots. Work from the bottom of your hair up to the roots. Also you can use conditioner to help detangle.
  6. Trim your hair regularly – Trimming your hair regularly helps your hair grow faster and keeps it healthier. It will also remove split ends and ultimately get you closer to being fully natural.
  7. Use products with natural ingredients – Products with natural ingredients will actually nourish your hair and help it grow strong. Hair products with sulfates will strip those natural oils away, leaving your hair dry and brittle. Also chemicals like Keratin Treatments should be avoided, as they alter and change the natural curl pattern and texture.
  8. Use protective styling with caution – Protective styling is a must for those who have natural hair. But keep in mind that too much of any good thing can be bad. Be cautious when wearing protective styles. Give your hair some breaks from heat styling. Your scalp needs to breathe and your strands need to be free sometimes too. It’s all about balance.
  9. Have Patience, your hair needs time to grow – Transitioning back to natural hair needs patience. You’re not going to be fully natural in just a few weeks, especially if you’ve been perming, relaxing, or straightening your hair for years. It may take months or more to fully get back your natural texture. Be patient. If you’re moisturizing, trimming, and conditioning your hair properly, you’ll see the results before you know it.
  10. Replace your weekly shampoo routine with co-washing – Regular use of shampoo can dry curls out. Try replacing it with co-washing where you use conditioner to cleanse your hair instead of shampoo. Our pink sugar conditioner is great or co-washing. HairYum Pink Sugar Protein Conditioner has protein and helps cleanse and protect the hair. Also use a good hair steamer to help smooth and soften hair.
  11. Minimize heat styling – As much as possible, avoid direct heat like flat irons, blow dryers, etc. while transitioning your hair. Excessive heat can reduce the hair’s elasticity and cause breakage. Heat damage can make your hair texture feel worse than it truly is. While you transition, let hair air dry or use a hooded dryer.

Note: this post is written specifically for people transitioning from chemically-relaxed hair, but it is still relevant to people transitioning away from heat or color treatments!

7 Braiding Take Down Tips

Happy New Year! Oh braids, we love to get them. Braiding can be a great protective style! Wearing braids for the right amount of time (less than 6 weeks) is excellent for promoting hair growth. However, the take down process can be a bit daunting and if the process is rushed your hair will end up damaged. You need to remove braids carefully and slowly to minimize breakage and shedding.

Here are 7 Tips that will ensure you don’t suffer hair loss or damage.

  1. Put Your Hair into Sections – The first and most important part of taking down any braidstyle is to put your hair into sections. Working in sections helps to make the task less overwhelming. Split your hair into 4 to 8 sections, and work one section at a time. Sectioning the hair will help you maneuver around your head and ease the process. Before you begin, take a spray bottle and fill with water and spray your roots and hair to reduce dryness and add moisture.
  2. Unravel and Detangle Rather Than Comb – Once the braids are all removed, it’s time to detangle. Well, don’t reach for a comb just yet! I know your gut instinct is to take a comb and work through all the knots, tangles, and shed hair, but chances are you’ll end up ripping out perfectly good and healthy hair in an effort to get out all the kinks. Finger detangling is best! Coat each section of hair with HairYum Pink Sugar Protein Conditioner and start detangling your hair with your fingers, beginning at the bottom and going toward the roots, working one part at a time. Do it gently so that you’re not pulling out excess hair, only the loose shed hair. If your braids were properly installed, it is much gentler to unravel your hair. DO NOT WASH your hair until all your hair is detangled. If you wash your hair without properly detangling, your hair will knot up and fall out in chunks (We speak from experience…have patience and detangle your hair well).
  3. Several problems online viagra mastercard embody localized soreness with a specified the main low back, generally hurting, and/or trouble your radiates towards the low back, entire hurt, and/or discomfort it goes towards mid back, rear and additionally business center (verts). However, the market is stormed with buy cialis from india http://appalachianmagazine.com/2016/12/28/15-things-kids-nowadays-will-never-know/ a number of other factors for ED, the prime reason is pornography. cialis 20 mg More Info Erectile dysfunction mainly hits men. Also, that acid causes rapid tooth decay and perhaps serious super viagra cheap appalachianmagazine.com complications involving the gums.

  4. Use Hair Oil – Braids take-down can be easier when you use oil. Using oil will provide just enough lubrication to unravel the braids without clogging up your hair. Start by adding moisture to the hair then add enough oil to coat the hair. You can use HairYum Vegan Organic Hair Oil to regain instant softness and vitality of your hair. Avoid applying too much oil to prevent the hair from becoming clogged and unmanageable. There should be enough oil and water to make the hair easier to manipulate but not so much that it feels heavy or greasy.
  5. Shampoo and Condition the Hair – After your hair is detangled and section, now it is time to wash and detox your scalp. Massage your scalp and work in the shampoo. Remember, your scalp has been working overtime under the braids, so you have to clarify and wash your hair and scalp well.  Shampooing and conditioning the hair is the best way to start fresh. To clarify your scalp, wash it with HairYum Lavender Mango Refreshing Shampoo to give your hair a super clean and yummy feeling. Deep conditioning is absolutely essential after taking down braids. After clarifying your scalp, use a deep conditioner to replenish and restore your hair. Use HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner to strengthen and replenish hair. Leave the conditioner in for 5 -10 minutes and rinse hair well.
  6. Trimming the Hair – Trimming is an essential part of healthy natural hair. Don’t hesitate to trim as needed. If you didn’t do so before installing your braids, your hair is most likely going to be ready for a trim immediately after keeping it hidden for several weeks. You can head to a professional if you’re not confident in your scissor skills. Don’t keep split ends lingering around for the sake of length, healthy hair needs to be trimmed regularly.
  7. Let Your Hair Chill – This means let your hair rest. Do not reinstall braids for a couple of weeks, and don’t reinstall braids on the same day you take down your braids. Our hair needs access to water and air, and needs to regroup after being tucked under braids. Wear your hair proudly in its natural state for at least two to four weeks before reinstalling a protective style.
  8. Get an Extra Set of Hands – If you have really small braids or you’re just tired and overwhelmed, get an extra set of hands and eyes to help you speed up the process. Just make sure they are not pulling your hair when they help take down the braids or rushing to comb your hair before you put conditioner on your hair and detangle.

The Importance of Deep Conditioning

All hair is made up of the same material, a tough protein called “Keratin.”  Textured hair requires proper care and attention because curly and kinky hair is prone to dryness and breakage due to its fragile and brittle state.

With all the manipulation that is done to hair daily, it is important to strengthen hair follicles by deep conditioning hair.  Deep conditioning hair helps prevent dryness and damage from heat and styling tools, keeping hair at its healthiest, most luminous state.

All hair textures can benefit from deep conditioning but for those of us with natural hair, deep conditioning is an absolute must, and here’s why!

Hair Nourishment

Just like any other part of our body, our hair also requires nourishment. Deep conditioning the hair infuses it with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and grow.

Hair Dryness and Breakage Prevention

Because of the emollients and other moisturizing ingredients in deep conditioner, hair’s elasticity will improve which means your hair becomes more flexible and manageable. Textured hair will experience less breakage when a deep conditioning treatment is apart of the haircare routine.

Length Retention

By improving hair’s elasticity through deep conditioning, hair becomes stronger and more resilient which helps in long term length retention. Having strong hair means less breakage and shedding.

Hair Repair

A deep conditioning treatment will help repair damaged hair, whether it be from heat styling, color, or any chemical treatments. Deep conditioning your hair will help renew and restore hair follicles, ensuring good hair days forever!

What is Deep Conditioning?

Deep conditioning is basically applying a deep or thicker conditioner in your hair for an amount of time to treat and repair damaged hair and/or to add whatever is lost back into the hair.

It is important that you use the right deep conditioner to achieve great results with your hair. Too much protein will make the hair go hard and too much moisture will make the hair mushy, so a good balance of protein and moisture is perfect for a deep conditioner.

HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner deeply moisturizes and repairs dry, damaged and/or over-processed hair. HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner contains Purified Water, Blueberry Extracts, Wheat Protein, Coconut Oil, Soybean Oil, Glycerin, Honey, and Shea Butter which are perfect ingredients for healthy natural hair. The Benefits to Hair Steaming….

Summer is here and having dry hair is one of the most talked about issues for women, especially us with natural hair. We tend to spend everything we have looking for the best solutions possible – searching for dry hair remedies that work! It seems like oils, conditioners or hair masks are logical fixes for dry hair, but we want to introduce you to a much simpler yet effective solution to combat dry hair.

Say Hello to Hair Steaming…

What is Hair Steaming?

Simply stated, hair steaming means means adding moisture to the hair in the form of moist heat (steam) to the hair strands. Hair steaming can be done in a number of different ways. For example, you can use a  handheld hair steamer, a standing steamer, a steamer cap,  or even enjoying the steam after a long warm shower.

Hair steaming is a one of the best things you can do to help your hair grow and strengthen the elasticity of your hair.  The benefits of hair steaming are incredible, your hair will be stronger and more vibrant.

Benefits of Hair Steaming

  • Opens Hair Cuticle – The hair cuticle opens when the warm vapor from the hair steamer is placed onto your hair. Thus, allowing nutrients to penetrate into hair and the moist heat encourages blood flow to the scalp.
  • Improves Hair Elasticity – Steam treatments improve the elasticity and strength of the hair. Elasticity refers to how much the hair strand can be stretched without breaking. Hair steaming helps the hair to absorb so much moisture that the curls will be able to bend and stretch. It keeps your hair in a strong elastic state, allowing you to style your hair beautifully without worrying of hair breakage.
  • Enhances Curl Definition – Moisture is one of the keys to great definition regardless of your hair texture. Hair steaming allows you to get the moisture to help reshape and boost your curls. You’re now able to walk out the door with lively and defined kinks, coils, and curls!
  • Porosity – Hair steam therapy is good for naturalistas with low porosity. It allows the water vapor to penetrate into hair strands for long lasting moisture. Because the cuticle layer is being opened, it is easier for products to penetrate into the hair to maintain supple flexible strands. Low porosity hair loves all moisture and steaming is like dessert to the hair.
  • Promotes Hair Growth –  Hair Steaming helps add moisture to the hair, which is the canvas for healthy hair growth. The warmth from the steam also helps fight through some product build-up/dirt on the scalp, making it easier to keep your scalp clean. Adding this treatment into your natural hair regimen will help you improve the overall health of your hair.

Applying the theory, now the medical science has proved that the medicine is as safe in all respect as the go to link viagra prescription is. Hair Porosity 101

Honestly, the first time we heard the word Porosity was a couple of years ago, when we were working on the hairyum collection. We wanted to ensure our products worked well with different hair textures, and realized understanding hair porosity is vital to attaining healthy, moisturized hair.

Hair Porosity simply refers to your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture, oils, or chemicals like color.  Here are three ways to determine where your hair falls on the porosity spectrum: low, medium, or high.

Yes, you can do these tests even if you are not completely natural.

  • The Float Test: Take a couple of strands of hair from your comb or brush and drop them into a bowl of water. Let them sit for 2-4 minutes. If your hair floats, you have low porosity. If it sinks, you have high porosity. If your hair sinks at a medium pace, not too fast or slow, you have medium/normal porosity hair.
  • The Strand Test: Take a strand of hair and slide your fingers up the shaft (toward the scalp). If you feel little bumps along the way, this means that your cuticle is lifted and that you have high porosity. If your fingers slip smoothly, then you have low porosity hair.
  • The Water Test: To determine your hair porosity level using water, spritz a small section of curls with water and watch how your hair reacts – does your hair absorb the water quickly (indicating high porosity) or does it remain on top (indicating a low porosity level).

The sex supplements helps to maintain estrogen hormone in the human body and in this way you can keep on the pulse of what’s cialis online cheap happening in your community and then you can then feed that information back to them. hairporosity

High Porosity:

High porosity hair has a difficult time holding onto moisture as it easily escapes the raised cuticles. It is important to avoid drying detergents and silicones that will make the issue worse.

Tips: Apple Cider Vinegar rinses work well on the hair as well as rich creams and butters. The hairyum coconut soufflé leave in conditioner works well and is a must for high porosity hair. Add our hairyum hair oil as a sealant for hair because moisture leaves so quickly. Aloe Vera gel or Aloe Vera juice will work to adjust the PH balance of your hair and seal in moisture.

High porosity hair often comes from heat or chemical damage.  When your hair is damaged, the cuticles raise up.  To repair hair, deep condition weekly with the hairyum blueberry deep conditioner.

Low Porosity:

Typically much harder to moisturize since it is more difficult for moisture to penetrate the hair shaft. Low porosity hair thrives on moisture. Water is the best moisturizer. Every day give your hair some hydration. Humectants are your friends.

Tips: Use water based, liquid leave in moisturizers that will moisturize without heaviness. Rinse hair often and lightly seal with our coconut leave in soufflé and hairgrowth oil. Heaven, our hairgrowth oil is light, easy to absorb and does not weigh hair down. Light weight oils are ideal for low porosity hair.  Also, use a hair steamer to allow moisture to get in.

Medium Porosity:

Medium porosity hair is easily moisturized and retains its moisture level well. You are very lucky if your hair fits in this category! Medium porosity hair allows moisture inside the cuticle easily, making hair less susceptible to breakage.

Tips: Use moisturizing conditioners, like hairyum pink sugar conditioner or our blueberry deep conditioner. Avoid leaving protein conditioners in the hair for more than 5-10 minutes as the protein will harden the hair when it is rinsed out. Add our hairyum hairgrowth oil to help seal your hair after conditioning.
