10 Common Natural Hair Mistakes

As much as I love the internet for all the information there is at our finger tips, there is much to be said about throwing caution to the wind. If you search natural hair advice on google, a million things pop up; some good, some not so good. As 2020 comes to an end (hallelujah) we must make sure our #hairgoals are on point and truly promote hair health and much as hair length.

As you read this list and reflect on it, some things seem so common sense, but as I am often reminded, common sense is not so common!

Here are 10 Common Natural Hair Mistakes:

  1. Detangling dry hair – if anything makes my blood boil it is this one. Stop it. Put some blueberry deep conditioner on that hair before you rip out your lovely strands trying to detangle dry hair. Not only is dry detangling harmful for your hair, it is really painful.
  2. Not Sleeping with a satin bonnet or pillow case. You must cover your hair when you sleep, protect your hair at night. Satin hair bonnets or silk pillow cases are a must have if you are trying to preserve your natural hair styles or curls.
  3. Too much heat. Too much heat leads to heat damage. Heat damage reduces hair growth, which leads to some people using more heat and the vicious cycle continues. Limit the use of hot combs, flat irons, blow drying, etc  and what your texture come alive.
  4. Not taking care of your body – Ultimately healthy hair starts from within. Yes, this is our slogan for a reason. Hair grows from the scalp which is directly affected by how we take care of our bodies from the inside. This means maintaining a healthy diet, drinking water, a good balance of vitamins and nutrients, and a healthy body.
  5. Over manipulation – We all remember when Sanaa Lathan shaved her hair for the movie, Nappily Ever After. Recently, she posted a pic on instagram with a head full of healthy hair. She attributes this growth to protective styles, braids, and almost no heat. One of the best ways to grow natural hair is leave it alone.
  6. Too much protein. Now, this one can be tricky because the right amount of protein can help hair grow but too much protein makes hair hard and stunts growth. Protein treatments should be done in moderation. Our coconut souffle leave in conditioner infuses protein into the hair and helps condition hair for amazing growth.
  7. Liver has many functions to tadalafil buy perform one of the vital function is to get away with the toxic substances. The secretion of testosterone is 10 times higher in men in their 60s viagra sale canada http://deeprootsmag.org/2013/10/09/sail-on-friend-sail-on/ compared with those in their 40s according to a study published in the Journal of Urology. Hal Needham, recognized as the “king of stuntmen”, (pictured correct) also chimed in by stating, ” Just about everyone I know continues to be or often see for source cheapest cialis professional goes on the chiropractor.

  8. Lack of patience. Hair growth happens at about 1/2 inch per month on average. That’s a grand total of about 6 inches per year for the hair on your head. Hair growth is like weight loss, it won’t happen over night. You have to exercise patience and lots of it.
  9. Not taking hair vitamins. It is best to get vitamins and nutrients from your diet. Most of us don’t, so taking a good vitamins with biotin, folic acid, zinc, etc is really good for our hair and our entire body. Read labels as many vitamins have harmful chemicals. HairYum vitamins truly work and don’t cause skin breakouts.
  10. Not following product directions. Directions are made for optimum product performance; this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experiment. It simply means that sometimes success is as simple as doing as you’re told. Read labels and follow directions.
  11. Not using HairYum Haircare! Ok…#shamelessplug. Seriously, review our product line, we truly have created each product to help solve a hair problem. However, we understand that when it comes to natural hair there is not a one size fits all. We are just saying don’t knock it, till you try it 🙂

Bonus: Quitting on your hair. Don’t EVA give up on you hair and stop comparing your hair to others. All hair types are beautiful. How we care for our hair and what products we use on our hair are the keys to healthy hair growth.

Winter Hair Tips

Winter is officially here! The cold months can bring dryness and breakage for all hair types, especially natural hair.

Here are 10 Winter Hair Tips:

  1. Deep Condition – Yes, we have said this many times before…deep conditioning is a must! Adding extra protein, moisture and nutrients to the hair is very important, especially during harsh winter months. Use HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner weekly to strengthen hair and reduce breakage.
  2. Allow your hair to air dry. It is a good idea to let your hair air dry and limit your use of tools like blow dryers and flat irons. If you don’t have the time to allow your hair to fully air dry, sit under a hooded dryer or use a blow dryer on cool settings. Don’t leave the house with wet hair; with cold weather this can cause your hair to break.
  3. Protective Styling – Cover your hair as much as possible during the winter months and sleep with a satin cap or pillow case. Styles like twists, updos, braids, buns, wigs, and extensions can tuck your hair away from the cold, dry weather.
  4. Eat Clean & Stay Hydrated – we know this is easier said than done but it is very important to keep your body healthy, remember healthy hair truly starts from within. Drink plenty of water to keep hair and scalp hydrated.
  5. Seal your ends – It never fails to use a good 100% natural hair oil to seal in moisture and minimize split ends. HairYum Hair Growth Oil locks in moisture to protect hair from over exposure to the harsh elements. No matter how busy you are, don’t forget the oil your hair needs. 7. Turn the Hot water down – Yes, we know it is winter! Thoughts of a nice, hot bath can warm you up; but if you want a happy, healthy scalp – please turn the water temperature down. Hot water is neither good for your skin or your hair. Hot water can add to dehydration for natural hair so cool water is best.
  8. Hydration & Refresh – To ensure hair is constantly hydrated on the go, use our moisture and hydrating mist. This is a must have and will make sure your curls are not dry or prone to frizz. HairYum Moisture Hydrating Mist can be used on the hair, face, and body.

  10. Steaming – Steaming is the truth! We love it so much, we may come out with our very own steamer! Take in the benefits of our blueberry deep conditioner by a adding a steam treatment to your hair. Steam opens up the hair cuticles so the conditioning ingredients can penetrate the shaft. Steaming strengthens the hair, defines curls, and promotes growth.

7 Braiding Take Down Tips

Happy New Year! Oh braids, we love to get them. Braiding can be a great protective style! Wearing braids for the right amount of time (less than 6 weeks) is excellent for promoting hair growth. However, the take down process can be a bit daunting and if the process is rushed your hair will end up damaged. You need to remove braids carefully and slowly to minimize breakage and shedding.

Here are 7 Tips that will ensure you don’t suffer hair loss or damage.

  1. Put Your Hair into Sections – The first and most important part of taking down any braidstyle is to put your hair into sections. Working in sections helps to make the task less overwhelming. Split your hair into 4 to 8 sections, and work one section at a time. Sectioning the hair will help you maneuver around your head and ease the process. Before you begin, take a spray bottle and fill with water and spray your roots and hair to reduce dryness and add moisture.
  2. Unravel and Detangle Rather Than Comb – Once the braids are all removed, it’s time to detangle. Well, don’t reach for a comb just yet! I know your gut instinct is to take a comb and work through all the knots, tangles, and shed hair, but chances are you’ll end up ripping out perfectly good and healthy hair in an effort to get out all the kinks. Finger detangling is best! Coat each section of hair with HairYum Pink Sugar Protein Conditioner and start detangling your hair with your fingers, beginning at the bottom and going toward the roots, working one part at a time. Do it gently so that you’re not pulling out excess hair, only the loose shed hair. If your braids were properly installed, it is much gentler to unravel your hair. DO NOT WASH your hair until all your hair is detangled. If you wash your hair without properly detangling, your hair will knot up and fall out in chunks (We speak from experience…have patience and detangle your hair well).
  3. Several problems online viagra mastercard embody localized soreness with a specified the main low back, generally hurting, and/or trouble your radiates towards the low back, entire hurt, and/or discomfort it goes towards mid back, rear and additionally business center (verts). However, the market is stormed with buy cialis from india http://appalachianmagazine.com/2016/12/28/15-things-kids-nowadays-will-never-know/ a number of other factors for ED, the prime reason is pornography. cialis 20 mg More Info Erectile dysfunction mainly hits men. Also, that acid causes rapid tooth decay and perhaps serious super viagra cheap appalachianmagazine.com complications involving the gums.

  4. Use Hair Oil – Braids take-down can be easier when you use oil. Using oil will provide just enough lubrication to unravel the braids without clogging up your hair. Start by adding moisture to the hair then add enough oil to coat the hair. You can use HairYum Vegan Organic Hair Oil to regain instant softness and vitality of your hair. Avoid applying too much oil to prevent the hair from becoming clogged and unmanageable. There should be enough oil and water to make the hair easier to manipulate but not so much that it feels heavy or greasy.
  5. Shampoo and Condition the Hair – After your hair is detangled and section, now it is time to wash and detox your scalp. Massage your scalp and work in the shampoo. Remember, your scalp has been working overtime under the braids, so you have to clarify and wash your hair and scalp well.  Shampooing and conditioning the hair is the best way to start fresh. To clarify your scalp, wash it with HairYum Lavender Mango Refreshing Shampoo to give your hair a super clean and yummy feeling. Deep conditioning is absolutely essential after taking down braids. After clarifying your scalp, use a deep conditioner to replenish and restore your hair. Use HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner to strengthen and replenish hair. Leave the conditioner in for 5 -10 minutes and rinse hair well.
  6. Trimming the Hair – Trimming is an essential part of healthy natural hair. Don’t hesitate to trim as needed. If you didn’t do so before installing your braids, your hair is most likely going to be ready for a trim immediately after keeping it hidden for several weeks. You can head to a professional if you’re not confident in your scissor skills. Don’t keep split ends lingering around for the sake of length, healthy hair needs to be trimmed regularly.
  7. Let Your Hair Chill – This means let your hair rest. Do not reinstall braids for a couple of weeks, and don’t reinstall braids on the same day you take down your braids. Our hair needs access to water and air, and needs to regroup after being tucked under braids. Wear your hair proudly in its natural state for at least two to four weeks before reinstalling a protective style.
  8. Get an Extra Set of Hands – If you have really small braids or you’re just tired and overwhelmed, get an extra set of hands and eyes to help you speed up the process. Just make sure they are not pulling your hair when they help take down the braids or rushing to comb your hair before you put conditioner on your hair and detangle.

The Importance of Deep Conditioning

All hair is made up of the same material, a tough protein called “Keratin.”  Textured hair requires proper care and attention because curly and kinky hair is prone to dryness and breakage due to its fragile and brittle state.

With all the manipulation that is done to hair daily, it is important to strengthen hair follicles by deep conditioning hair.  Deep conditioning hair helps prevent dryness and damage from heat and styling tools, keeping hair at its healthiest, most luminous state.

All hair textures can benefit from deep conditioning but for those of us with natural hair, deep conditioning is an absolute must, and here’s why!

Hair Nourishment

Just like any other part of our body, our hair also requires nourishment. Deep conditioning the hair infuses it with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and grow.

Hair Dryness and Breakage Prevention

Because of the emollients and other moisturizing ingredients in deep conditioner, hair’s elasticity will improve which means your hair becomes more flexible and manageable. Textured hair will experience less breakage when a deep conditioning treatment is apart of the haircare routine.

Length Retention

By improving hair’s elasticity through deep conditioning, hair becomes stronger and more resilient which helps in long term length retention. Having strong hair means less breakage and shedding.

Keeps Hair Soft, Smooth and Shiny

Deep conditioning weekly or every other week, helps contribute to smooth and shiny hair.

Hair Repair

A deep conditioning treatment will help repair damaged hair, whether it be from heat styling, color, or any chemical treatments. Deep conditioning your hair will help renew and restore hair follicles, ensuring good hair days forever!

What is Deep Conditioning?

Deep conditioning is basically applying a deep or thicker conditioner in your hair for an amount of time to treat and repair damaged hair and/or to add whatever is lost back into the hair.

It is important that you use the right deep conditioner to achieve great results with your hair. Too much protein will make the hair go hard and too much moisture will make the hair mushy, so a good balance of protein and moisture is perfect for a deep conditioner.

HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner deeply moisturizes and repairs dry, damaged and/or over-processed hair. HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner contains Purified Water, Blueberry Extracts, Wheat Protein, Coconut Oil, Soybean Oil, Glycerin, Honey, and Shea Butter which are perfect ingredients for healthy natural hair. Our naturally derived ingredients will repair damaged hair and improve hair porosity. And our blueberry deep conditioner smells AMAZING!

Suggested Usage:
-After using HairYum Lavender Mango Shampoo, smooth HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner through hair and leave in for two to five minutes.

Hair Porosity 101

Honestly, the first time we heard the word Porosity was a couple of years ago, when we were working on the hairyum collection. We wanted to ensure our products worked well with different hair textures, and realized understanding hair porosity is vital to attaining healthy, moisturized hair.

Hair Porosity simply refers to your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture, oils, or chemicals like color.  Here are three ways to determine where your hair falls on the porosity spectrum: low, medium, or high.

Yes, you can do these tests even if you are not completely natural.

  • The Float Test: Take a couple of strands of hair from your comb or brush and drop them into a bowl of water. Let them sit for 2-4 minutes. If your hair floats, you have low porosity. If it sinks, you have high porosity. If your hair sinks at a medium pace, not too fast or slow, you have medium/normal porosity hair.
  • The Strand Test: Take a strand of hair and slide your fingers up the shaft (toward the scalp). If you feel little bumps along the way, this means that your cuticle is lifted and that you have high porosity. If your fingers slip smoothly, then you have low porosity hair.
  • The Water Test: To determine your hair porosity level using water, spritz a small section of curls with water and watch how your hair reacts – does your hair absorb the water quickly (indicating high porosity) or does it remain on top (indicating a low porosity level).

The sex supplements helps to maintain estrogen hormone in the human body and in this way you can keep on the pulse of what’s cialis online cheap happening in your community and then you can then feed that information back to them. hairporosity

High Porosity:

High porosity hair has a difficult time holding onto moisture as it easily escapes the raised cuticles. It is important to avoid drying detergents and silicones that will make the issue worse.

Tips: Apple Cider Vinegar rinses work well on the hair as well as rich creams and butters. The hairyum coconut soufflé leave in conditioner works well and is a must for high porosity hair. Add our hairyum hair oil as a sealant for hair because moisture leaves so quickly. Aloe Vera gel or Aloe Vera juice will work to adjust the PH balance of your hair and seal in moisture.

High porosity hair often comes from heat or chemical damage.  When your hair is damaged, the cuticles raise up.  To repair hair, deep condition weekly with the hairyum blueberry deep conditioner.

Low Porosity:

Typically much harder to moisturize since it is more difficult for moisture to penetrate the hair shaft. Low porosity hair thrives on moisture. Water is the best moisturizer. Every day give your hair some hydration. Humectants are your friends.

Tips: Use water based, liquid leave in moisturizers that will moisturize without heaviness. Rinse hair often and lightly seal with our coconut leave in soufflé and hairgrowth oil. Heaven, our hairgrowth oil is light, easy to absorb and does not weigh hair down. Light weight oils are ideal for low porosity hair.  Also, use a hair steamer to allow moisture to get in.

Medium Porosity:

Medium porosity hair is easily moisturized and retains its moisture level well. You are very lucky if your hair fits in this category! Medium porosity hair allows moisture inside the cuticle easily, making hair less susceptible to breakage.

Tips: Use moisturizing conditioners, like hairyum pink sugar conditioner or our blueberry deep conditioner. Avoid leaving protein conditioners in the hair for more than 5-10 minutes as the protein will harden the hair when it is rinsed out. Add our hairyum hairgrowth oil to help seal your hair after conditioning.
