Hair is a very personal; with many different textures and patterns (Click HERE to listen to HairYum Yummy Podcast about Hair Textures).

Going natural? You have 2 choices:

  1. Big Chop – Cut all your chemically-relaxed hair off.
  2. Transition slowly – slowly cut the chemically-relaxed hair off with each trim.

Here are some tips for Transitioning Hair:

  1. Condition with Care – Deep conditioning the hair is extremely important. Your hair is in a weak, fragile state while you’re transitioning, that’s why it needs all the nutrients and moisture it can get. A properly conditioned hair allows for easy combing and styling. Deep conditioning weekly will help maintain the vitality of your hair while transitioning to natural hair. HairYum Blueberry Deep Conditioner does a wonderful job of strengthening and moisturizing hair.
  2. Moisturizing your hair is a must – Moisturizing your strands on a regular basis is important since curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair. Look for hydrating ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera, shea butter, and avocado oil on the label of hair products to make sure you’re getting the maximum hydration. 5. Pay attention to the way you detangle your hair – The best time to detangle your hair is when it’s wet. Use a paddle brush or wide-tooth comb when detangling your hair. Make sure to use HairYum Detangling Mist to moisturize your hair and loosen any tangles or knots. Work from the bottom of your hair up to the roots. Also you can use conditioner to help detangle.
  6. Trim your hair regularly – Trimming your hair regularly helps your hair grow faster and keeps it healthier. It will also remove split ends and ultimately get you closer to being fully natural.
  7. Use products with natural ingredients – Products with natural ingredients will actually nourish your hair and help it grow strong. Hair products with sulfates will strip those natural oils away, leaving your hair dry and brittle. Also chemicals like Keratin Treatments should be avoided, as they alter and change the natural curl pattern and texture.
  8. Use protective styling with caution – Protective styling is a must for those who have natural hair. But keep in mind that too much of any good thing can be bad. Be cautious when wearing protective styles. Give your hair some breaks from heat styling. Your scalp needs to breathe and your strands need to be free sometimes too. It’s all about balance.
  9. Have Patience, your hair needs time to grow – Transitioning back to natural hair needs patience. You’re not going to be fully natural in just a few weeks, especially if you’ve been perming, relaxing, or straightening your hair for years. It may take months or more to fully get back your natural texture. Be patient. If you’re moisturizing, trimming, and conditioning your hair properly, you’ll see the results before you know it.
  10. Replace your weekly shampoo routine with co-washing – Regular use of shampoo can dry curls out. Try replacing it with co-washing where you use conditioner to cleanse your hair instead of shampoo. Our pink sugar conditioner is great or co-washing. HairYum Pink Sugar Protein Conditioner has protein and helps cleanse and protect the hair. Also use a good hair steamer to help smooth and soften hair.
  11. Minimize heat styling – As much as possible, avoid direct heat like flat irons, blow dryers, etc. while transitioning your hair. Excessive heat can reduce the hair’s elasticity and cause breakage. Heat damage can make your hair texture feel worse than it truly is. While you transition, let hair air dry or use a hooded dryer.

Note: this post is written specifically for people transitioning from chemically-relaxed hair, but it is still relevant to people transitioning away from heat or color treatments!
